EVENT: NIAB TAG Conference to highlight ‘planning for the future’ outlook for UK arable production

12 Feb 2013

Sponsored by:NIAB TAG Outlook Conference 2013 sponsors

The 2013 NIAB TAG Outlook Conference will focus on the current and future impact of price volatility and variable weather conditions on arable businesses in the north-east and across the UK, and look at short and long-term solutions.

Bookings are being taken for the conference on Tuesday 12th February 2013 at the Scotch Corner Holiday Inn Hotel in North Yorkshire. Held once every two years the event is open to anyone involved in the food and farming sectors and in the past has attracted a good cross-section of the industry.

Speakers include NatWest’s Jim McLean on financial planning, Openfield’s Cecilia Pryce on world grain markets, NFU’s Gail Soutar with the latest on Single Farm Payments, plant researcher Cristobal Uauy from the John Innes Centre in Norwich on the future genetic potential of crops and NIAB TAG’s Patrick Stephenson and Nathan Morris on current yield expectations and cultivation choice.

“The conference theme this year is Which way now?” explains the event’s organiser Patrick Stephenson. “With the twin challenges of food security and climate change we should expect generally higher grain prices with drier summers and milder, wetter winters. Yet we seem to be experiencing something very different with one of the wettest seasons in many years combined with warnings of potentially volatile grain markets and a continuing uncertain global economic outlook.

“Many arable businesses in the north-east are asking where do we start? We’re aiming to show how planning at every point of the crop production pipeline can ensure our cropping systems are agronomically and economically resilient and help secure our farm business incomes,” says Mr Stephenson.
