The purpose of this project is to establish a research platform for novel and enhanced efficiency fertilisers (NEEFs).

The Platform supports a range of sites (climatic zones and soil types across England and Wales) for testing a range of products on multiple arable, forage and horticultural crops to enable a full characterisation of current and emerging NEEF products, including quantification of crop responses, efficiency of nutrient utilisation, and environmental impact (e.g. losses to groundwater and emissions of greenhouse gases and ammonia).

Where data are lacking on the ecotoxicology profiles of inhibitor products, analyses will be undertaken to provide more evidence. A roadmap to assess impacts on human health and food risks will be produced during the project.

The work is led by Niab, with support from various subcontractors supplying additional sites and expertise. The aim is to produce robust, independent and unbiased data that will inform policy development and decision making by farmers, manufacturers and other stakeholders.
