Vineyard workshop to be led by world-renowned expert

Fritz Westover

A Niab-organised vineyard workshop day will be led by world-renowned American Viticulture Consultant and Educator Fritz Westover on Friday 18th July.

The event which will be free to Niab Vine Club members, will cost £150 per person for non-members.

Organised by Niab viticulture and oenology research leader Dr Belinda Kemp, the day is designed to provide UK grape growers with practical solutions and insights tailored to the unique challenges of cool-climate viticulture. Taking place at Niab’s East Malling Research Vineyard, the event will introduce the UK industry to Fritz Westover for the first time.

Fritz will provide two 30-minute presentations, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with interactive sessions and demonstrations in the Niab vineyard.

Fritz, who is a leading consultant with over 25 years of experience in the industry, is the founder of Westover Vineyard Advising and the Virtual Viticulture Academy, which are both dedicated to improving grape-growing practices..

The discussions at the workshop will explore topics such as vine longevity from adopting a ‘closed system’ for vine training and pruning, leaf blade and petiole versus soil analysis, strimming versus herbicide versus cultivation, and other vineyard floor management considerations.

Commenting on the event, Belinda Kemp said “I am excited that Fritz Westover has agreed to make his maiden visit to the UK to see our production first hand. With expertise spanning various climates and regions, his insights will be particularly valuable for UK growers who are adapting to evolving environmental conditions. Fritz also hosts the popular ‘Vineyard Underground Podcast’, where he shares practical advice and interviews other industry experts”.

The Workshop takes place at Niab’s East Malling site on Friday 18th July, from 10am until 3.30pm.
