Dr Francis Wamonje

My role at Niab

I am a Senior Specialist working in the Pest and Pathogen Ecology Department, based at East Malling. At Niab, I specialise in molecular and applied entomology, with a strong focus on pest detection, surveillance and biocontrol strategies. I lead research projects aimed at improving agricultural sustainability and environmental resilience.

My molecular entomology research includes developing innovative environmental DNA (eDNA) tools for early pest detection, using molecular taxonomy to distinguish cryptic insect species, and applying DNA metabarcoding to support large-scale species identification for biodiversity monitoring. These research lines contribute to better pest management, pollinator conservation and more effective agroecosystem management.

Alongside this, my applied entomology work focuses on sustainable biocontrol approaches that enhance the effectiveness of biological control programmes and reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. 

My previous experience

I have developed a four-country career spanning Kenya, Tanzania, Canada and the UK, working across leading international research organisations, including the International Livestock Research Institute and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, and universities such as Sokoine University of 
Agriculture in Tanzania and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

Throughout this journey, my research has focused on the application of genomic tools to crop protection and the identification of novel biocontrol opportunities. This has included postdoctoral appointments and a Royal Society-African Academy of Sciences Fellowship, before joining Niab in 2021.

My future

The spread and reach of pests and pathogens is a serious and growing concern, particularly in the context of globalisation and the shift towards more environmentally sustainable crop protection methods. I am keen to continue advancing molecular approaches across their full spectrum for crop protection. The ability to generate actionable, granular identification quickly and in ways that require minimal additional technical expertise is critical.

Equally important is the need to stay abreast of emerging technologies and remain at the cutting edge of crop protection. Above all, these tools, methods and insights must be grower-friendly and appealing to industry.
