New Chief Executive to lead Niab into new phase of growth

Dr Katrina Hayter

Dr Katrina Hayter has been appointed as Chief Executive of UK crop science organisation Niab, effective from 1 September 2026.

Dr Hayter brings extensive leadership experience spanning the public sector and commercial agribusiness. Most recently, she served as Global Head of Sustainable Agriculture, Land Use & Food at HSBC’s Group Sustainability Centre of Excellence, where she helped shape international approaches to sustainable food systems, agricultural investment and climate resilience

She succeeds Professor Mario Caccamo, whose leadership since 2021 has played a pivotal role in Niab’s transformation and strengthened its position as a world-leading organisation driving innovation in agriculture and horticulture.

Working alongside Chief Operating Officer John Sillitoe and Niab’s leadership team, Dr Hayter will lead the organisation through its next phase of growth and impact. Priorities will include advancing crop improvement through pre-breeding and precision plant breeding; delivering independent validation and certification of plant varieties and emerging technologies; and strengthening agricultural and horticultural systems through practical, science-led solutions that improve productivity, sustainability and profitability for farmers and growers.

Commenting on her appointment, Dr Hayter said, “Niab is uniquely positioned at the intersection of science, innovation and practical farming. It is a privilege to join the organisation at such an important time for agriculture and horticulture.

“Farmers and growers are facing significant challenges, but also major opportunities driven by innovation, technology and collaboration. I look forward to working with Niab colleagues, partners and stakeholders to accelerate impact, strengthen resilience across the food system, and help deliver a productive and sustainable future for agriculture.”

Professor Caccamo said: “Leading Niab through this period of transformation and growth has been a privilege. I am immensely proud of what my colleagues have achieved together in strengthening the organisation and delivering impact for farmers and growers. Katrina brings outstanding experience and leadership, and I am confident she will lead Niab successfully into its next chapter.”

Niab Board Chair Dr David Buckeridge said, “Following a comprehensive selection process, the Board is delighted to appoint Katrina Hayter as Niab’s next Chief Executive. She brings exceptional international experience across sustainable agriculture, finance, policy and commercial leadership, together with a deep understanding of the challenges facing farming and food systems today.

“I would also like to recognise Mario for his outstanding contribution to Niab. His leadership has transformed the organisation and created a strong platform for future success.

“With Katrina’s appointment, we are confident Niab will continue to strengthen its role as a trusted partner to farmers, growers and the wider agricultural sector, delivering science-led innovation that solves real-world challenges and supports growth, resilience and profitability across the sector.”

Professor Caccamo leaves Niab at the end of June and John Sillitoe will take the role of Acting Chief Executive until Dr Hayter joins in September.
