Initial Part I Course

The initial training course for prospective cereal seed crop inspectors will be held on 14-17 January 2019.

Intensive training is provided by experts in cereal variety identification, aided by demonstrators who are experienced official crop inspectors.  The course is designed to provide the appropriate training for candidates sitting the Part I examination for an APHA Cereal Crop Inspector’s Licence, Category 'A' which is held on the final day of the course.  To qualify for a full licence, candidates must pass the Part II  examination  in  the  same  calendar  year as the  Part  I.   In  2019,  candidates can attend the Part II exam on Wednesday 12th June 2019.  Further training will be available in the morning before the examination.

Candidates should note paragraph 5 of the Crop Inspector's Licence.  This states that a crop inspector may charge a reasonable fee for making an inspection but otherwise shall not derive any private gain in carrying out his/her functions.

Features of the initial course include:

  • High practical content using selected plant material.
  • Detailed instructions of crop inspection techniques.
  • Comprehensive literature.
  • NIAB Certificate of Proficiency indicating PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION for those who reach the required standard.

Since the emphasis is on the practical identification of cereal varieties, the course may also be of interest to agronomists, advisers, maltsters, grain traders, farmers and seed growers.

The training course will begin at 8.45 am on Monday morning and finish on Thursday morning with the official APHA Part I examination on Thursday afternoon.

The fees are:

Initial Pt I training (including lunches) (zero rated VAT)      =   £1,245.77

Pt I and II APHA examinations (zero rated VAT)                =   £   222.90  - Total = £1,468.67

It is a requirement under the Seeds Marketing Regulations 2011 that a person applying for a crop inspector’s licence has “completed an appropriate training course relating to the inspection of seed crops of that species and category”.  Any new candidates wishing to take the examination only must provide us with documentary evidence that they have received appropriate training before taking the examination.

Cancellations received up to 14 days before the course are refundable, less a £80 administration charge.  After that, cancellations are subject to the entire course fee. (Fees cannot be carried over to the following year under any circumstance)PLEASE NOTE - Booking alterations/amendments cannot be made within one month of the course start date, except under exceptional circumstances.
