Barley Grain Identification

A must for anyone involved in the barley industry, whether breeding, buying, trading, or processing, who needs to be able to recognise the morphological characters that positively identify barley varieties from a grain sample, with particular attention to the effects of threshing on the grain.

Barley-id logoWhether a first-time attendee or someone more skilled looking for a refresher, our team of experienced tutors will fit the course to you; from basic morphological structure identification to more advanced character recognition. The course covers all winter and spring barley varieties on the AHDB Recommended List as well as some on the National List and Common Catalogue that may also be commercially grown and traded.

Delegates have the choice of a voluntary assessment, with a certificate of competence awarded to everyone who passes. A course booklet and variety description sheets will also be issued, and course equipment will be available to purchase on the day.

The course will also make use of NIAB’s unique interactive web-based variety identification programme barley-id. A subscription-based tool available to the agricultural industry it has been developed to help identify barley variety samples correctly and quickly and is useful for both assisting in variety identification and as a training tool.
