NIAB is a dynamic, research led and market driven plant bioscience organisation, with an emphasis on innovative applications for end-users in the agricultural, horticultural and food sectors. NIAB EMR, based in Kent, focuses on perennial fruit crops with over 100 years of innovative, strategic, and applied research in this sector working closely with a range of stakeholders including industry.
We wish to appoint a Research Leader in Plant Pathology to work as part of our busy and friendly Pest and Pathogen Ecology (PPE) team based at East Malling in Kent. You would be responsible for building on our significant international reputation, focusing on the study of detection, biology, epidemiology and management of plant pathogens to facilitate the development of effective and sustainable crop protection on fruit crops. The overall aim is to devise and implement strategies that will reduce the impact of plant pathogens and reduce the use of pesticides in UK horticulture, especially in top and soft fruit sectors.
The successful candidate will join an established and collaborative department with the expectation to collaborate within the department, with other departments at NIAB EMR and the wider NIAB group.
It is anticipated that the post holder will be mainly responsible for applied and industry facing research including field-based pathological research. You will develop a collaborative programme of research as an independent researcher managing your own research portfolio. You will also need to demonstrate a track record of securing project funds with a strong and active national and international scientific presence. Initially, you will be involved in the portfolio of current research activities in the pathology group. You will be supported by a friendly, progressive, and enthusiastic team to deliver solutions primarily for the fruit industry but with the freedom to expand into other exciting areas of agricultural pathology.
For this post, it is essential that you need to develop a very close working relationship with the industry (growers, consultants, agrochemical companies etc.) as well fellow researchers. In summary, this is an opportunity for the post-holder to become the key provider of technical development and support in disease management for the UK horticulture industry and beyond.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline with 5+ years’ experience of developing and delivering research programmes and services and information based on scientific research in ecological, genetic, pathology.
The salary for this role is in the range of £47,612 to £62,823 per annum, dependent on skills, experience, and qualifications.
