NIAB provides an exceptional research environment in which to undertake basic and strategic research on crops. We are looking for an enthusiastic data researcher, with strong UAV phenotyping, remote sensing, image analysis and machine learning skills to work primarily on crop phenotyping using low-cost UAVs, 2D and 3D phenotypic analysis of crop diversity data in wheat, barley and other key crops in the UK. Activities will be focused on the establishment of UAV phenotyping protocols at NIAB, high-throughput phenotypic analysis of yield traits for crop characterisation, as well as software tools development for a variety of crop images acquired by low-cost drones, in several crop species. We will work with crop breeders, agronomists and other scientific partners both in the UK and worldwide developing phenotyping and phenotypic solutions to support and enhance crop research. 

You will have knowledge of UAV technology, remote sensing, 2D/3D image analysis and machine learning, and a PhD in computing sciences discipline that will support phenotypic analysis in crops that underpins essential research in crop characterisation and crop development. You should have expertise in UAV-based crop phenotyping, Python or other equivalent data science programming languages, and familiarity with image analysis tools, database manipulation and handling large image datasets, along with excellent writing skills, strong track record of academic publications, and a desire to see research outcomes reach practical applications. The position will require national travel. This role will be reviewed at regular intervals and the contract may be extended and/or the role made permanent. The role is within the Department of Data Sciences, Cambridge Crop Research, NIAB.

Starting salary in the range £30,342 to £40,036 per annum, depending on skills and experience.  For more information email:
