Based in Cambridge, with a major site in Kent and field trials centres across England, NIAB has unique capabilities and expertise, delivering high quality research, statutory and commercial services, and helping UK agriculture and horticulture to remain productive and resilient. Key activities include crop genetics and breeding, variety evaluation, farming systems and soils, pathology and agronomy, across arable, horticultural and forage crops. NIAB also has significant expertise in one-to-one and one-to-group delivery of impartial advice and information, by telephone, online, in the office and in-field, as well as industry and professional development training including technical field-based agronomy and farm business advice to a portfolio of farmer clients.

Between September 2022 and March 2025, NIAB is working in partnership with Savills and AKC to  deliver support to farmers across England during the Farming Transition. This is one of several projects making up Defra’s Future Farming Resilience Fund (scale up phase), together the FFRF projects will provide support to up to 32,000 farmers across England.

We have a vacancy for a Farm Business Resilience Consultant who will be home-based (probably in the Midlands / North) and who will deliver support to farm businesses across England.

Working in NIAB’s Farming Systems team, and as part of a team of up to 30 consultants in NIAB and partner organisations, the postholder will:
• Co-ordinate and deliver a programme of 1 to 1 Farm Business Reviews for farm businesses in England within the framework developed for the NIAB Farming Resilience project.
• Deliver follow up technical or business support visits and/or group training on more detailed topics (depending on specialism).
• Develop and deliver knowledge exchange and contract service/consultancy business.

Applicants are expected to have a degree in a business or agricultural subject, along with previous experience in a business / technical consultancy role relevant to UK farming (this can include a relevant graduate scheme).  Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be able to demonstrate that they can handle sensitive situations and confidential information. Practical knowledge of farm business management and agricultural systems in the UK is essential, along with event, demonstration or presentation experience. Applicants should be organised, able to adapt to varying and new work situations and plan and prioritise workload. The role will require independent working, and delivery of activities as part of a team. A full driving licence and willingness to travel by road to sites throughout England are also important.
