I joined NIAB in 1979 after graduating in Biology from Queen Mary College, London and working for six years as a research biologist with the British Antarctic Survey. At NIAB I have worked as a trials officer on vegetables and on the forage crops but over the last sixteen years I have made my name as the specialist for oilseed and protein crops. This period was important for the introduction of hybrids in oilseed rape and the first tentative appearance of GM technology. It also saw new ventures with soya, winter linseed and lupins. I was intimately involved with all these developments
In addition to classical variety trials, I have considerable experience of agronomy trials and am currently working on nitrogen rates and trace element requirements for oilseed rape and am collaborating in a major project simulating GM gene flow between rape crops.
