Variety indentity and purity

Variety identification and purification
NIAB can help with purification and improvement of seed stocks in a number of ways.

Laboratory analysis of seed or grain samples can establish the identity and level of purity of a sample using skilled visual assessment, chemical tests or electrophoresis as required.

We can also sow and record plots of submitted material to assess varietal purity and identity of a sample outside of the certification process, what we call ‘information only’ plots.

NIAB also has the ability to purify seed stocks for breeders and variety maintainers. Small crops can be grown and managed for the production of Breeder’s Seed - the start point of certification. This has successfully saved valuable historical varieties by improving the purity of seed stocks and preventing the loss of a valuable variety.
