NIAB has a broad range of experience in testing fungicides & insecticides in both the field and laboratory. We are GEP compliant and ISTA accredited. We also supply pathogen cultures and infected seed stocks.
Bespoke packages are available in the following areas.
Cereals
All the major UK cereal foliar and stem based pathogens are available for inoculated tests with the option of mist irrigation to promote infection. Natural infection trials can be conducted at regional centres prone to the target pathogen. Specialist seed treatment trials are available using infected seed stocks (natural or artificially inoculated). Full yield and quality analyses may be done on harvested produce. Access to a broad range of varieties allows selection of suitable varieties for specific pathogens.

Potatoes
A large mist irrigated facility for blight is available. Plots are inoculated with spreader plants, and the epidemic can be controlled by specifically timed bursts of irrigation. Tests on control of tuber blight as well as foliage blight are available. Full yield and quality analyses may be done on harvested produce. Natural infection trials can also be conducted at regional centres prone to blight.
Effects of fungicide tuber treatments can be evaluated on prepared material with different levels of tuber-borne pathogens.
Oilseed Rape
Major diseases of oilseed rape can be produced routinely in infected beds, and the environment manipulated to encourage disease development. Trials can be taken to yield in larger plots sited in areas of high natural disease risk
Pulses
Small plot inoculated work and large plot yield work as for oilseed rape on a full range of foliar diseases for peas, field beans, and lupins. Seed treatment work eg for downy mildew control on peas can be done on infected land
Field Vegetables
Expertise available on major crop groups – Brassica, Allium, Umbelliferous crops, and salads. Fungicides can be evaluated against naturally occurring diseases, or in inoculated plots with irrigation. Harvest data can include yield and quality analyses as required.
Minor Crops
Potential for work on many minor combinable crops, minor field vegetable species and some ornamental and amenity plants. Effectiveness of fungicides on some fruit and vine crops can be evaluated under glasshouse conditions only.
Seed Treatment Evaluation
In addition to field-based studies, a range of laboratory and glasshouse tests is available for assessing effectiveness of fungicides. Loading effects on phytotoxicity, viability and vigour can also be assessed in ISTA accredited laboratories.
Fungicide Insensitivity
Small scale equipment available for screening fungal isolates for insensitivity to agrochemicals.
