The interaction between a host crop and its pathogens is continually modified by the prevailing environmental conditions. Understanding this relationship and its implications on the disease epidemic is the fundamental basis of a sustainable disease management programme. By quantifying the effect of the principle climatic components on disease progress then key factors can be identified and used to trigger control measures in the field. Use of such management systems may lead to a reduction in the use of pesticides, or result in greater levels of efficacy from standard control programmes.
