Co-Extra

Co-Extra - GM and non-GM supply chains: their CO-EXistence and TRAceability (Contract nr 007158).

Description
Co-Extra aims at developing comprehensive tools and methodologies and integrate them along with existing ones into embedded decision-support systems aimed at enabling co-existence between GM and non GM (conventional and organic) crops; tracing of genetically modified organism (GMO) materials and derived products, along the food and feed chains; anticipating the future expansion of GMOs in both quantitative as well as qualitative terms. More information here.

NIAB Objectives
The Crop Genetics Group involvement in WP5:
• Assessment of methods for the extraction and purification of DNA templates that can used for GMO detection, especially from processed food (and ingredients).

Development of DNA highly sensitive and specific assays for the detection of DNA from four plants species with known GM varieties (oilseed rape, sunflower, soya and maize).
DNA extraction from different processed material obtained from commercial sources using different extraction protocols tested using above assays.

• Evaluation of non-PCR amplification methodologies for applicability to GMO detection

Characterisation of event-specific ‘junction’ fragments for GMO identification. In partner with Lumora, testing the use of non-PCR methods to detect GMO using event-specific primers.

• Involved in evaluation of different platforms using real-time PCR for quantitation

We are involved in a trial where NIAB will be testing the Roche Lightcycler™ for quantitation.
