Fungicide Interaction Trials

Contact: Dr Sandra Chapman

Cereals
The fungicide interaction trials (FIT) are designed to elucidate the effect of selected fungicidal regimes upon the interaction of various diseases and carefully selected varieties of winter wheat. These varieties are chosen on the basis of their susceptibility to disease and generate data pertinent to the integrated control of disease in the field. The plots are taken to yield and dry matter assessments are made at the end of the season.

Disease levels within the plots reflect natural infection and normally the varieties are sown at five carefully chosen sites within the United Kingdom.  Recent trials have contained 6 varieties Claire, Solstice, Robigus, Einstein, Glasgow and Gladiator and were sown in Kent, Hants, Cambs, Hereford and N.Yorks. These varieties are selected according to their disease resistance to mildew, yellow rust, brown rust, Septoria nodorum and S.tritici, Fusarium with Eyespot as an optional extra.

The disease assessment data that is generated enables a direct comparison to be made between the effectiveness of a standard 'good practice' programme, the selected new fungicides incorporated into the programme and the untreated control. The current NIAB control treatment is Proline (0.4l/ha)+ Bravo (1.0 l/ha) at GS 31/32, Opera (1.0 l/ha) + Opus (0.4 l/ha) at GS 39 and Swing Gold (0.75 l/ha) at GS59-65 but we are always open to discussion!
