My role as a research pathologist at NIAB is an extremely varied one. My team conduct pathology trials on a range of broad-leaf, vegetable and horticultural crops. In addition to national and recommended list trials I also manage a range of GEP efficacy trials for a number of agrochemical companies. I am also in charge of the disease diagnostics laboratories, which conduct tests on a range of species for both farmers and the seed trade. I run a varied research programme, which encompasses a broad spectrum of host pathogen interactions. In the support of our diagnostic laboratories we have developed and introduced real-time PCR based tests for seed-borne pathogens which has had many benefits both for NIAB and more importantly our customers. Many of the other projects have allowed me to continue my interest in the effect of environmental conditions on the development of disease epidemics.
I am a member of the British Society for Plant Pathology and on the Applied Mycology and Bacteriology Group committee of the AAB. I also manage the Centre for Disease Resistance and Diagnostics website.
