NIAB, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge, CB3 0LE, UK
I lead the Centre which has around 60 staff based in Cambridge and at the regional trialing sites. My associate Heads of Centre are Donal O’Sullivan for plant genetics and Simon Kerr for crop evaluation.
I am a plant biotechnologist with 20+ years’ experience in academic and commercial research. I joined NIAB from Syngenta in December 2005.
Pre-breeding programme
I am also responsible for the pre-breeding team at NIAB. This is a recently established venture that will provide a product conferring capability available to all UK researchers and end-users. It is a unique platform for delivery of novel traits and associated marker technologies in wheat, oilseed rape, pulses and non-food crop applications. At its heart is a programme that will validate traits and markers in pre-competitive, UK adapted germplasm that can be accessed by commercial breeders and end-users.
Pre-breeding has been established using a £1.25 million investment from the NIAB Trust which provides start-up infrastructure and staff. In addition, Trust funding will be used be used to start a systematic assessment of CIMMYT synthetic hexaploid wheats (SHWs) as sources of useful traits for UK wheat improvement.
Access to the resources of the pre-breeding programme is open to all researchers on a cost recovery basis. Enquiries should be directed to me using the contact details above.
