Joanna was appointed forage crop specialist for NIAB after completing her PhD studies in 2013. The focus of this study was leguminous and non-leguminous fertility building crops accumulation potential and recovery of nitrogen in mixed farming systems. This fuelled an enthusiasm for efficient utilisation of residues and the use of leguminous crops as nutrient sources within cropping systems. Joanna also has a good breadth of agricultural knowledge in part derived from gaining a first class BSc (Hons) Agriculture and also from managing her family beef fattening unit and suckler herd. This dimension provides an unusual perspective of been able to examine from a scientific viewpoint as well as on farm practical requirements.
The forage specialist role at NIAB co-ordinates the National, Recommended and Descriptive List programmes for herbage and maize crops. Joanna also actively undertakes and proposes contract research, as well disseminating the findings out to the NIAB membership and agricultural community.
