NIAB TAG run one-day courses on grassland weed identification and management for farmers, crop inspectors, seed producers and agronomists.

Course programme includes:

Morphology of grasses

  • Identification of grasses in the field, or in turf, that look different to the main grass species
  • Recognition of general characters, e.g. leaf colour and shape, pigment, growth habit
  • Making detailed observations using ligules and auricles

Includes a practical session using plant material to illustrate how the characters can be used to identify specific weeds.

Crop management

  • Choosing the right species/variety for the different regions of the UK
  • Learning how certain grass species and varieties can be used to discourage a major grass weed problem by suppressing weed growth
  • Determining the level of grass weed present and whether re sowing is necessary
  • Impact of different weed species on each grass end-use markets, turf, seed, forage
  • Weed control – using herbicides in a grass crop
  • Recognition and management of noxious weeds
