Company Information

The National Institute of Agricultural Botany was founded by a Deed of Trust in 1919. NIAB has enjoyed Royal support from its foundation and is very proud that Her Majesty The Queen is patron. The Queen’s patronage recognises the work NIAB does for national and international agriculture and commands respect world-wide.

Various revisions to the company structure created the current structure which consists of NIAB Limited and The National Institute of Agricultural Botany Trust.

NIAB Limited is a company limited by guarantee that is a registered charity charged with conducting operations to meet its charitable objectives.

A Board of Directors are the Trustees of the Charity and administer the Company.

A Chief Executive is appointed by the directors to manage the day to day operations of the Company. To facilitate effective operations, the Chief Executive has delegated authority, within the terms of delegation approved by the Board, for all operational matters. The Chief Executive also exercises strategic and scientific direction as approved by the Board.

The National Institute of Agricultural Botany Trust is also a registered charity and owns all land and buildings and has a specific object to support NIAB Ltd in the pursuit of its objects including the provision of land, facilities and financial support.
