VARIETY DIVERSIFICATION SCHEMES TO REDUCE SPREAD OF YELLOW RUST IN WHEAT AND MILDEW IN BARLEY.
Yellow rust and mildew can spread between varieties that are susceptible to the same race of the pathogen. The risk of severe and widespread infection may be reduced by:
1) Growing varieties with good resistance to the disease (as indicated by high resistance ratings the HGCA Recommended List).
2) Diversifying the varieties grown on a farm so that they are not all susceptible to the same race of the pathogen. This is best achieved by using the Variety Diversification Schemes produced by the UKCPVS. These are updated regularly and the most recent version can be found here.
